THE MCDONALD'S GRIMACE BEANIE - MCHAPPY DAY UK

DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED BY NOVELLI FOR MCDONALD'S UK'S FIRST MCHAPPY DAY

Novelli designed and manufactured the reversible Grimace beanie for McDonald's UK's first McHappy Day 2026 fundraising campaign, supporting Ronald McDonald House UK. Ahead of the official fundraising day on 26th September, the beanie has already been turning heads — including a standout appearance on the streets of London Fashion Week.

OPPORTUNITY

McDonald's UK wanted a fundraising product for their first McHappy Day event that would do more than sit on a shelf — something people would genuinely want to wear, buy and talk about, while directing funds to Ronald McDonald House UK.

Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free "home away from home" accommodation for families with children being treated in hospital, so they can stay close to their child throughout treatment.

Novelli proposed the Grimace design: a playful, nostalgic take on one of McDonald's most recognisable characters, built as a reversible beanie to add extra value and wearability to a limited-edition fundraising item.

SOLUTION

Novelli designed and manufactured the beanie end-to-end — from concept through to production and delivery.

  • Reversible design — two-sided knit, purple exterior / yellow interior
  • Limited edition — produced in a fixed run to support the McHappy Day UK campaign window launching 26th September 2026
  • Character-led design — a nostalgic, hand-drawn take on the Grimace character, designed to feel collectible rather than purely promotional.

OUTCOME

The beanie was generating hype well before McHappy Day UK's official fundraising date.

  • Worn on the streets of London Fashion Week - generating organic attention outside McDonald's own channels
  • With the UK's first McHappy Day fundraising day taking place Saturday 26th September, the beanie is helping build momentum for the campaign ahead of the day itself

This is one of the clearest examples of Novelli's approach to fundraising merchandise: design something people want to own for its own sake, and the cause visibility takes care of itself — sometimes before the campaign has even officially launched.
