Working alongside a large global franchise has meant overcoming some very tight timeframes, in-store health and safety restrictions, franchise arrangements, ambitious sales targets and budgets to deliver exceptional promotional strategies and merchandise that ensure successful campaigns for our client.

Design a GWP to drive sales of the McDonald's Share Box

Novelli created a series of reusable share bags
THE OPPORTUNITY
They came to Novelli looking for a way to increase the family Share Box meal sales over the summer campaign window. Their initial brief was to create a cost-effective, exciting summer gift with purchase for a limited-edition summer Share Box.
INSIGHTS & DATA
Novelli researched buyer behaviour to understand what GWP mechanism to propose. We knew that the start of summer is good news at McDonald’s. As people venture outdoors, eating on the run becomes more common place, and quick service retail thrives from an increase in foot traffic. We knew that the McDonald’s Family Share Boxes were, from a value point of view, a good option for families. We also learned that, outside of food costs, there was a packaging cost of 40c per box to the Franchisee. Novelli understood that any solution wasn’t going to be easy as McDonald’s is a large franchised organisation with significant operational and logistical challenges. Despite this, our solution was remarkably simple.
OUR SOLUTIONS
Our idea was to repack the Share Boxes into a limited-edition gift with purchase. With sustainability and recycling a pressing issue, Novelli developed reusable bags made from RPET, which is recycled PET plastic, one of the most common plastics used in the world. Next, Novelli commissioned New Zealand artists, including Greg Straight, to create artwork that would capture the quintessential Kiwi summer experience.
Kiwis could grab their towel, sunhat, McDonald's Share Bag and enjoy a Kiwi Summer on the Go!
OUTCOME
We could deliver to the Franchisee with minimal disruption to operations while still collecting the 40c per unit which effectively served to top up the marketing budget and reduce activation costs.
But that is not the only reason why McDonald’s were ‘Lovin it’. This campaign delivered results - Share Box sales lifted a massive 20% year on year.
It was no surprise that Novelli was repeatedly asked to produce Share Bags for many years giving over half a million reusable bags to Kiwi families.

THE OPPORTUNITY
McDonald’s launch of McDelivery in NZ in 2018 showcased our ability to deliver over and above with tight timeframes and a wide range of elements.
OUR SOLUTION
Novelli sourced product, created art files, produced visual proofs for approval. We then produced, branded and distributed the products to the branches using both local and offshore suppliers. Additional to this, this sensitive campaign was kept completely confidential by Novelli and our partners.
The team contacted us 20 days prior to this with a request to have activation material delivered to 11 branches before launch date.
