OPPORTUNITY
The team at Ace Hardware wanted to create a new reusable carry bag for their stores to retail. The aim was to re-imagine / re-design the carry bags they had used in their stores for many years.
There were two key reasons for the bag review:
- Support CMN Hospitals: The bags will help raise awareness and funds for Children's Miracle Network (C.M.N.) Hospitals.
- Go Green: Responding to customer demand and state regulations, Ace Hardware wanted to shift away from single-use plastic to an eco-friendly option.
... over 500 municipalities in 28 states had plastic bag legislation in effect as of 2021.
Additionally, 12 states have single-use plastic bag bans: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
State-wide bans in Colorado and Rhode Island went into effect at the start of 2024.
INSIGHTS & DATA
Generally, customers do not like having to pay for a retail carry bag. Research has shown that customers are, however, generally more willing to pay a small fee if they know that the proceeds from the sale will go to charity.
This demonstrates that many customers are motivated to contribute to a good cause, even through seemingly small purchases like a reusable carry bag.

OUTCOME
Novelli's reusable carry bag design has achieved remarkable success in three significant ways.

Established in 1991, the Ace Foundation provides support and opportunities for the Ace community to give back locally. A key recipient of the Foundation is the Children's Miracle Network. Ace stores support their local CMN Hospitals in a variety of ways, and the money raised in each store goes to the local CMN Hospital. Children's Miracle Network Hospitals raise funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to kids across the U.S. and Canada. Donations stay local to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, and support research and training, all to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.
