SUPPORTING 'THE BEAUTIFUL GAME' IN NZ

The team at Novelli have been privileged to work with the Macca's team for many years.  We've particularly enjoyed working with them to develop an effective range of branded merch to support their incredible sponsorship of football in New Zealand. 

This merchandise has been used to support coaches and players at the 'grassroots' level across the country.  We have also been proud to develop merch for the supporters of the A-League Wellington Phoenix and, most recently, the Auckland FC teams.

Designing and producing merch to raise awareness of Macca's significant support of  grassroots football in NZ

WHAT WE DID

 

Novelli created a range of practical, branded merch for players, coaches, managers and volunteers

OPPORTUNITY

Macca's has been the primary sponsor of junior 'grassroots' football in New Zealand for over 20 years. They help thousands of players, coaches and referees with resources and equipment.

All junior teams from the six federations were given one trophy each. During the season, every player on the team would get to hold onto the trophy for a week - a unique method to motivate and foster a positive atmosphere for the upcoming generation of players.

This support of junior level football has been extremely well received by clubs, coaches, players and their families.  

Macca's continues to reorder these items from Novelli and provide them to clubs for the next generation of enthusiastic football fans.

GIVEAWAYS FOR FANS AT A-LEAGUE GAMES

Produce a giveaway that can be distributed at stadiums for Wellington Phoenix FC supporters to cheer on their team 

WHAT WE DID

 

Produced co-branded scarves which were given to supporters to use at matches

OPPORTUNITY

In 2022, McDonald’s signed on as a premium partner of the Wellington Phoenix FC, on a multi-year deal supporting the team in the A-League.

Macca's looked to Novelli to assist them with developing a giveaway to be given to fans at the games. 

INSIGHTS & DATA

Macca's wanted to increase the number of fans attending stadium games and drive awareness of their sponsorship of the team.

A key strategy to boost fan numbers was attracting younger supporters to the games. If they engage with the club early, they are more likely to become lifelong fans.

Novelli concentrated on concepts for co-branded merchandise that would be iconic, possess a high perceived value (despite being a freebie), and be both signable and collectible.

OUR SOLUTION

We created lightweight fabric scarves which were;

- Eye-catching.  Looking around the stadium, these signs were incredibly visible!! 

- Effectively co-branded with both Wellington Phoenix FC and McDonalds branding.

- Collectible.  We designed the scarves so that there was room on them for kids to get their idols to sign after the game.  Fans could then take them home and hang them on their bedroom walls.

- Practical.  These scarves are dual use as fans can wave them during the game but also use them to keep warm on those chilly winter nights at the stadiums.

- Well priced to be used as a giveaway.

OUTCOME

These scarves were a huge hit with fans!  Unlike other giveaways that you sometimes see discarded on the way out of stadiums, these were treasured and taken home as a memento - increasing McDonald's brand exposure.

In September 2024, Macca's announced their sponsorship of the new Auckland FC team joining the A-League in 2025.  Novelli has already been involved in producing amazing merch for these new fans.  Roll on the 2024/25 season!
